Album of the Day: Green Day - American Idiot

There’s some decent pop songs in here. But there’s an awful lot of noise. What’s with all the power chords and posturing? Green Day work best when they’re Green Day: back to basics pop punk. No one wants to hear a punk rock opera. I didn’t make it to the end. No shit. Like punk never happened.

Album of the Day: Beach House - Teen Dream

Not a bad album, but the NME naming it as one of the Top 500 albums of all time tells you more about NME, than the music itself. And so here we have a very dreamy album. It doesn’t inspire - it sends you to sleep. Which may - or may not - have been the point. Pleasant enough, but hardly a rallying call.

Album of the Day: Dexy's Midnight Runners - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels

Energy, enthusiasm, optimism. That’s Dexy’s - and never more so than on the Searching debut masterpiece. It’s not just a record. It’s setting a blueprint for what Kev believes music should achieve, and how to live your life.

I honestly believe that Dexy’s are equally as important as 2Tone in bringing together a diverse mix of musical styles. At the heart of Searching are fantastic tunes. The messages and call to arms are a bonus.

For God’s sake, burn it down, etc.

Album of the Day: LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

This is such a hypnotic album. I found myself drifting between tracks, not really paying too much attention as one track ended and another begins. It’s all so hypnotic. All My Friends is clearly a banger. There’s a cult like feeling to the whole album, with mantras sucking you in. Rather joyous.

The Postman Delivers

The soundtrack for American Graffiti - a double CD as well. You know how fond I am of doubles.

I love this film, almost as much as I now love the soundtrack. It use to be a consistently strong seller when I was working on the market store in the early 80’s. For a period of around three years it seemed to sell at a steady pace, week in, week out.

I never saw the appeal at the time tbh. It was old man rock ‘n’ roll music. Oh the irony of being turned on my psychobilly at the time, and not really making the connection.

American graffiti is hit after hit after hit, as Wolfman Jack might say. I’m being drawn back to rock ‘n’ roll later in life: the music, the clothes, erm, the hair.

Wasted on youth, etc.

Album of the Day: T. Rex - Electric Warrior

For some unknown reason this reminds me of the Metal Micky telly show. It would have been the perfect soundtrack: new, shiny, the future. It still sounds fresh, over fifty years later. Bolan knew how to riff. He’s Chuck Berry with an afro perm. The singles of course stand out. Jeepster had me swaying along first thing in the morning, still in my PJ’s. There’s a certain amount of sorrow, before the boogie picks you up again. Decent.

Album of the Day: Elvis Costello - Brutal Youth

I always find Costello a little too clever with the lyrics. What a bounder! Writing intelligent lyrics… I think I’m just a passive listener. The music is always great, as is the case on Brutal Youth. The band sounds tight here. He always benefits when backed by the Attractions. Maybe the last great Costello album before he hit the comfortable years?

Album of the Day: Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Of course this album is preposterous. That’s the appeal. I spent most of the time listening to the bass lines. I really wanted to buy a copy. I even found a cheapo copy on ebay. But it’s a crap album. That’s why it’s so cheap. Doh! In summary: I like the idea of the album, but not the execution.

Album of the Day: The Who - Tommy

Spotify tried to serve me up three and a half hours of this. No ta. I pressed on with the original release. The storyline is BONKERS. I tried to ignore this and focus on the music instead. Rock and opera should never appear in the same sentence. It’s a mess of an album that lectures you. YOU MUST LISTEN! I’d rather buzz off me tits with some drum ‘n’ bass tbh.

Return to Mu Mu Land

Fancy some more KLF mixes?

COURSE you do.

This is pretty cool - an archive of personal mixes of all things KLF inspired, now dumped on the modern interweb and ready to download.

There’s quite a story behind the philanthropic sharing as well:

“I am a 72 year old totally anal KLF fanatic and sometime DJ …think squats and forest clearings back in the day. Though now on palliative care (dying) I would like to share my vinyl with you all.”

It’s impossible to put together any definitive KLF discog - either official or bootlegs. There’s so much out there, most of it worthy of a listen.

You get the impression that this is encouraged. It’s not as if the KLF themselves were shrinking violets when it came to copyright lifting for their own work.

They’re still at it as well. The KLF name may be gone, but new music - or projects - continue to drop frequently.

Mu Mu Land is a never ending story it seems.

There’s even talk of a Sunny Stockwell gig back at Transcentral in… 2323.

We’ll al be pretty ancient by then.

Yep.
